PLPR/W P2 Joint School Activity, Unit 1, The Magic Science Museum (2016-17)

Primary 2 students visit to Hong Kong Science Museum

On the 4th of October, 2016, the trip to the Science Museum was organized to provide our Primary 2 students with practical experience, to make the PLPR/W unit, The Magic Science Museum more realistic, and to provide additional knowledge in a fun learning environment.

The informational power point was presented to give teachers and students an outline and blueprint of the Hong Kong Science Museum, to prepare our students for the museum’s English language environment, and to heighten their experience for maximum enjoyment.

“Visiting the Hong Kong Science Museum” Booklet was re-designed for students to participate in a variety of tasks while experiencing the magic of science (Visiting the Hong Kong Science Museum).

Our primary 2 students were divided into 6 groups, and each group was supplied with the Exhibition Floor Plan, booklets, cameras and stationery. The English teachers and experienced Teachers’ Assistants were the group leaders, who, with great enthusiasm led groups of students into this science adventure.

Our science experience started at the ground floor of the exhibition. Here, students explored the World of Mirrors with effects such as vanishing body, twins, total reversal and mirror maze. They also looked into the Convex and Concave Mirrors and Mirrors of Invisibility.

Following this, we examined the Life Sciences with many different types of dinosaurs displayed, in particular, life sized skeletons of Brontosaurus and Lufengosaurus Magnus. They also experienced different animals and their habitats.

The Children Zone was closed this year but a small area was designated for children to play and experience the magic of science. Students tried the Slow bubbles, Bubble Sheet and Dancing ball.

On the first floor students visited the Motion and Mathematic sections as well as the Electricity and Magnetism Gallery. Students performed various tasks in the Computer Laboratory and found these activities to be engaging.

The Second floor of the HK Science Museum was home to the Telecommunication Gallery, Food Science, Home Technology and Transportation sections. Students saw a full size plane, as well as models of various planes, ships, boats, submarines, cars, bikes and a balloon. The driving and flight simulators were students’ favorite activities and, despite the long lines, they were eager to participate.  These interactive experiences proved to be extremely entertaining as well as educational.

At the end the students visited a new Biodiversity Gallery that opened this year. We are attaching the scanned booklet for parents’ and students’ reference (Biodiversity Gallery Leaflet).

Ultimately, the visit to the Hong Kong Science Museum was very successful, exciting and productive. Afterwards, students were able to relate better to the story and the unit concepts, to understand and remember the floor plans, and to give examples of things seen and experienced on each floor. The majority of students were able to finish their assignments

The visit to the Hong Kong Science Museum became a part of the PLPR/W unit that students much anticipate each year. We have all appreciated the experience and the impact it has had on students.  A wonderful and rewarding experience!
